What is the purpose of this research?
This is a decision-making research study.

What can I expect if I take part in this research?
  • This is a brief online study.
  • The study does not use your name or any identifiable information.
  • Your task entails completing a drawing task and rating drawings of your peers.
  • At the end, you will be asked to take a brief survey.
  • Upon completion, you will be paid a participation fee of $2 plus any additional bonus payments that you earn as part of the study.
What should I know about a research study?
  • Whether or not you take part is up to you.
  • Your participation is completely voluntary.
  • You can choose not to take part.
  • You can agree to take part and later change your mind.
  • Your decision will not be held against you.
  • Your refusal to participate will not result in any consequences or any loss of benefits that you are otherwise entitled to receive.
  • You can ask all the questions you want before you decide.
You may not be told everything or may be misled
As part of this research design, you may not be told about all of the procedures of this research.
Who can I talk to?
If you have questions, concerns, or complaints, or think the research has hurt you, talk to the research team. The principal investigator for this study is Hashim Zaman at Harvard Business School. If you have any questions about this study, you can contact Hashim Zaman at

Thank you for your participation. Please read the following instructions before starting your task.

You are being asked to take part in a research study being done by Hashim Zaman and Karim Lakhani from Harvard Business School, Sijie Lin from University of Toronto and Aishwarrya Deore from Georgetown University. The purpose of this research is to better understand decision-making processes. Your participation will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.  For your participation today you will
earn an amount of money that depends on your performance in the task. As a participant, you will be assigned to a group with two other teammates.

 Task and Compensation
In this study you will be completing a drawing task that consists of:
  • Draw on top of shape outlines.
  • Before you begin the task, you will get an opportunity to practice drawing.
  • Once you begin the task, you will work for 5 minutes.
  • At the end of 5 minutes, you will evaluate the output of your peers and your work will also be evaluated.
  • At the end, you will fill out a brief survey and a post-experiment questionnaire.

Compensation
Once you have finished drawing, you will be asked to count the number of shapes drawn by each of your peers. After that, please pick one of the shapes at random and assign a quality rating to it. The quality assessment for each peer will be between 0 to 100%, where 0 indicates that the drawing should not be counted and 100% indicates that the drawing is of the highest quality. Please write the count and quality of each peer's work in the space provided on that page.

The peers you have evaluated will not know your assessment of their output.

Your compensation will be based on the number of shapes you draw multiplied by the quality rating assigned to your work. For example, if you draw 10 shapes and the assessed quality rating for your work is 50%, you will be paid 50% of 10 or $5.

Practice Session

This is a practice page. Your drawing on this page will not count towards your compensation. The idea is to get you comfortable with drawing as you practice.

  • To begin drawing, just click inside the box with the shape only once
  • Scroll the mouse over the outline of the shape to begin drawing.
  • To pause drawing, just click again only once
  • You do not have to keep your mouse clicked while drawing

Your drawing Accuracy is: %

In the actual task, you will be judged based on both the quality of drawing as well as the number of shapes you end up drawing.

Assessment Test

Please begin drawing. You have 5 minutes to complete this task. You may draw as many shapes as you wish in 5 minutes. Click Next to go to the next shape
